Introduction to Composites for Aerospace Engineers

      Composites for Aerospace Engineers
Collaboration between the AAIS, IMR Test Labs & ASM International

The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to composite materials and structures for engineers and technical personnel, with particular focus on the aerospace industry.

The course material is organized in a manner that guides the student from raw materials, through design and manufacturing, and into real-life applications of composites.

From a design perspective, students will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of various fiber and resin systems. They will learn about laminated plate theory, composite failures theories, and material and structural testing. From a manufacturing perspective, students will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of the common composite manufacturing methods, including post-processing and assembly.

Students will also be introduced to failure analysis of composites, and non-destructive testing and inspection.

      Course Coverage
The course relies heavily on real-world examples to illustrate key learning points. The objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding of:
  • The components of composit materials and structures
  • Technical terminology common in the industry
  • Fundamental design tools and methods
  • Composite manufacturing techniques
  • Post-processing, assembly, inspection, and failure analysis
  • Real-world applications from the aerospace industry, as well as a wide-range of other industries such as marine, civil infrastructure, and consumer products
