Principles of Failure Analysis for the Aerospace Industry

Principles of Failure Analysis for the Aerospace Industry
Collaboration between the AAIS, IMR Test Labs & ASM International

Principles of Failure Analysis for the Aerospace Industry is a custom three day course on the theory and practice of failure analysis and prevention. It is intended for engineers and technicians with all levels of industrial experience, as well as for anyone interested in how knowledge of failures can improve product quality, manufacturing productivity, and customer support.

The course is specifically targeted to the aerospace industry by the inclusion of aerospace-related case histories and materials, including failures in composite materials. Hundreds of engineers and technicians from Pratt & Whitney, GE, and numerous other companies have taken this course and provided terrific feedback that ASM International has used to improve the course and the content covered.

Who Should Attend?

This course is primarily intended for people who are new to failure analysis or for those who want an update. It is also designed for engineers, technicians and others interested in understanding how and why components fail.

      Course Coverage

A very practical approach to failure analysis is taught using a combination of lecture, hands-on student activities, and case studies.  Each student is provided with a 3-ring-binder containing seven professionally written and richly illustrated lessons.  Each lesson is followed by a brief quiz and the course concludes with a final examination.

Upon successful completion, students will receive a certificate of completion from ASM International, and awarded accreditation of IACET's CEUs.
  • General Procedures for Failure Analysis
  • Types of Failure and Stress
  • Ductile and Brittle Fractures
  • Fatigue Failures
  • Wear Failures
  • Corrosion Failures
  • Elevated-Temperature Failures
Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the learner can:

·         Describe general procedures, techniques and precautions in failure analysis

·         Recognize how stress systems relate to fracture of ductile and brittle materials

·    Identify typical fatigue, wear, corrosion and elevated-temperature failure characteristics
